The biggest MelodyMatrix update so far: tutorials in the new Learn section, new and much improved sheet-music views, an easier way to control playback, and a faster, lighter app.

Learn: tutorials are now available

• The new Learn section shows all tutorial series as cards, with their level, number of lessons, duration and your progress.
• A “continue where you left off” banner takes you straight back to your last lesson.
• Each series page lists its lessons with a preview of the first bars and their duration, so you can start any lesson or mark it as done.
• A lesson can open several views together, for example a piano above the sheet music, and the piano fits itself to the notes of the lesson.
• Lessons with a written score show the music exactly as written, with the correct clefs, key signature and note names.

More views for sheet music

• New Fly-Over view: a camera glides over the score in 3D while glowing balls hop from note to note, and every note you hear lights up.
• The Play-Along and Create Sheet Music views now follow the recording with a marker and highlight the notes that are playing.
• Choose how a song appears: the full score from the start, or note by note as it is played.
• Colours, cursor and camera settings can be changed in a settings window and are remembered for next time.

Playback improvements

• A new playback bar at the bottom of the window to play, pause, rewind, skip forward and drag to any position in a recording.
• Pause and continue playback exactly where you stopped.
• The views stay in sync when you jump to another part of a song or change its speed.
• Improved play buttons.

Convert audio to MIDI

• Turn an audio file (mp3, wav, …) into MIDI notes with the new Convert button. Everything runs on your own computer, nothing is uploaded. Works best with a clean recording of solo piano.

Performance improvements

• Much lower memory use, also with long recordings and large scores.
• Fixed a crash when opening some MIDI files.
• Smoother views thanks to threading improvements behind the scenes.
• Updated to Java and JavaFX 27.

This release fixes a startup issue introduced in 1.2.0 where the loading screen shown at startup could stay on screen instead of disappearing once MelodyMatrix was ready.

Bug fixes

• Fixed the app’s loading screen not disappearing after startup on some systems — on macOS it could stay on top of the app, and on Linux it could linger behind the main window. The loading screen has been removed.
• Fixed a rare case where the app could briefly freeze at startup while checking your license status in the background.

This release lays the groundwork behind the scenes for an upcoming new “Learn” section, alongside playback improvements and initial MusicXML support.

Getting ready for more Learn content

• Lesson series can now be configured more flexibly, so future lessons can automatically open the right viewer and sound settings for that lesson instead of a single fixed setup.
• Improved how the app checks your license in the background, paving the way for premium lesson content to be securely unlocked without extra steps.
• Learn content will load in your app’s language going forward, with a safe fallback to English when a translation isn’t available yet.
• Behind-the-scenes changes so upcoming premium lessons can be shown in the catalog (rather than hidden) even before you unlock them, so you can see what’s available.

Playback improvements

• Only one recording plays at a time now, avoiding overlapping audio when switching between lessons or recordings.
• Added a countdown timer while a recording is playing.
• Added a playback speed control, so you can slow down or speed up recordings.
• Fixed an issue where fast, back-to-back notes could get dropped during playback.

Other changes

• Initial support for loading MusicXML files, including a fix for complex files getting stuck while loading.
• Started integrating sheet-music rendering for a future notation view.
• New splash screen.
• Added particle effects to the piano view.
